The Lorax

This weekend do something for your little ones in Southeast Michigan! Bring them out to Plymouth, at the Penn Theater in Plymouth, MI. May 18th, 19th, and 20th to see The Lorax. The show starts at 7:00 PM. Saturday and Sunday also has a 5:00PM showing. All tickets are on sale for just $3. What a deal!!

A young boy residing in a polluted, grim world visits a strange creature called the Once-ler who lives in such seclusion that he never appears in full and only his limbs are shown. He asks the Once-ler why the world is in such a run-down state. The Once-ler explains to the boy that he arrived in a beautiful, cheerful world containing happy, playful fauna that spent their days romping around blissfully among "Truffula trees." The Once-ler begins to cut down the truffula trees, thinking they will help him craft "Thneeds," his invention that he thinks everyone will need.

The Lorax, a small orange creature, appears from the stump of a truffula tree. He "speaks for the trees" and warns the Once-ler of the consequences of cutting down the truffula trees, but the Once-ler ignores him. Soon the once beautiful land becomes polluted and the fauna flee to find more hospitable habitats. Eventually the final Truffula tree is cut down, and without Truffulas the Once-ler cannot make any more Thneeds. This leads to the closure of Once-ler's factory and the disappearance of the Lorax. The Once-ler lingers on in his crumbling residence, living in seclusion and remorse, while pondering over a message the Lorax left behind: a stone slab etched with the word "Unless". The Once-ler now realizes that the Lorax means that "unless" someone cares, the situation will not improve. The book then returns to the present, ending on an ambiguous yet optimistic note where the Once-ler gives the boy the last Truffula seed and encourages him to plant it so that Truffula trees can return as well as the fauna, and so would the Lorax.

This is one Michigan event that your kiddos will love from the playful rhyme to bright colors!

The last thing a homeowner wants to do is invest money into their property which will not pay off in the end. So which home improvements really pay off--and which don’t?

Each year, Remodeling magazine and REALTOR magazine produce one of the real estate industry’s top tools: “The Cost vs. Value Report” which ranks home improvements around the nation. The clear winners overall for resale value v. job cost: exterior replacements like windows, siding and decks. Inside, midrange kitchen and bath remodels and attic-to-bedroom conversions led the pack. Buyers love kitchen, bathroom and bedroom upgrades!

To make the most of your remodel, Carl Vogel of This Old House magazine recommends the following:

* Invest in the right projects. Kitchens and baths get the job done; swimming pools and home offices don’t. And minor projects may fare better than more expensive remodels.

* Choose the right styles. Think “classic” and “neutral” for interior finishes--and don’t over personalize. Adding on? Make sure the addition blends with the rest of the house.

* Match your renovations to the neighborhood and the region. Make sure your remodel matches the value of your house and the value of other houses in the area. And make sure you’re not investing in an improvement that buyers may not consider much of an improvement. Will they really appreciate that deck in Anchorage? Or that fireplace in Phoenix?

* Keep real estate demand in mind. Buyers will pay more for remodels in a pricey, active market than they will for those in a softer market. Don’t “over-renovate.”

The bottom line is that remodeling can add value--if you know what buyers want and you’re willing to play by industry rules.

The Shades of Pink Foundation: A Walk at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak

Many Southeast Michigan women, who are diagnosed with breast cancer have extra financial burdens placed on them during treatment and recovery. Common issues are insurance payments, food, transportation, childcare, and other essentials of daily Michigan life. Shades of Pink Foundation offers temporary financial assistance during their time in need.

The Shades of Pink Foundation: A Walk at the Zoo event will raise money to provide temporary financial assistance to women who are experiencing financial distress at the time of a breast cancer diagnosis. The gates open the day of the walk at 7 a.m., which includes pre-walk networking, access to vendors, a commemorative t-shirt, pin and breakfast snacks. Walkers can choose a mapped-out walk, three or six-mile route. Walkers can register individually or in teams and can ask friends and family to sponsor them as well.

$35-ages 18 and up, $25-ages 6-17, free- ages 5 and under

This is a fun event Southeast Michigan Area that is also for a great cause!

These consist of mini-storage units where a monthly charge is incurred. You finally found a Southeast MI home that you love, but moving can be time consuming and frustrating. Wouldn't it be great if you find a way to make it easier? Here are some helpful tips to help you get organized for a smooth and efficient move to your new SE Michigan home.

1. Change your address and notify companies before you move. Start by filling out a change of address form in advance of your move. Doing this ahead of time can help you to avoid hassles like past-due bills, service lapses and even identity theft. It is also a good idea before you move to set dates to discontinue your utilities at your old address as well as arrange for these services to be turned on at your new address.

2. Create a moving schedule.
It is a good idea to set up a moving schedule a few months before you move. Set it up as a week-by-week checklist to manage the process and help to stay on track. A moving schedule helps you to keep track of the little details or things that may be over looked, thus helping you to avoid last minute headaches.

3. Establish a packing system.
Packing is a major time consumer so think about coming up with a packing system so all of your boxes end up in the right rooms when they get to your new home. Many professional movers recommend that you use the color code system where you color code each box with a particular room to avoid any confusion with the movers. It is also helpful to give your movers a floor plan of your home with each room labeled.

4. Get rid of unnecessary items.
The less boxes you pack the less you have to move and finally unpack. So it makes sense to thoroughly go through your items and get rid of the things you just don't need. Items such as unread books, half-empty cleaning products, clothes that you know you wont wear again should be given away to charity or sold at a garage sale. You don't want to bring the clutter to your new home!

Detroit Toy Stories

What's more fun to do in Detroit then going to a Toy Exhibit? Bring the kids and let them see the fascinating toys that you grew up with! Remember your favorite toy -- or toys -- from when you were a kid? Detroit Toy Stories will help you bring back those joyful memories.

Drawing on over 7,000 items in the Society’s collection, this exhibit features a variety of playthings from multiple generations of metro Detroit children, including games, dolls, wardrobes, doll houses, pedal cars, hula hoops, toy soldiers, toy trucks and much more. In addition, video of historic wind-up toys and classic toy commercials is hand on to assist in remembering old favorites for parents and grandparents who wish to share such memories with their children and grandchildren.

Several “play stations” throughout the gallery invite young and old to sit down and play games that have stood the test of time: Tinker Toy, Operation, Etch A Sketch, Slinky and checkers. Personal stories and photos from a cross section of metro Detroiters are sprinkled across the exhibit recounting the toys that made their childhood special, and you can share your own stories in the exhibit’s memory book.

Expect many “I had one of those” moments as you explore Detroit Toy Stories.

How Can You Sell Your Home When Your Neighbors Are Unsightly

Trying to sell your home but can't because of your neighbors? Before you were trying to sell your Southeast Michigan home, your neighbors overgrown lawn, chipping paint and littered driveway may have been unsightly and annoying, but now there unkempt property is a hindrance to you selling your home. How can you expect to get your asking price when your neighbor's house is not a good selling point?

Here are a few actions you can take to make your neighborhood a little more presentable:

1. Your best bet is to start by being neighborly and simply communicating with them. You may uncover a problem that you can help to solve. Is your neighbor elderly or ill? Perhaps you could help out with lawn care or basic maintenance. You might even get other neighbors involved to lend a hand.
2. If you have an HOA, you can go to the president or governing committee. Most HOA’s have strict requirements for upkeep, and they take quick action to correct violations.
3. Call the city code enforcement. If your neighbors’ grass is knee high and they have a rusted out Chevy in the front yard, they are probably in code violation.
4. Use a fence or landscaping to hide unsightly side or back yards.
5. Some home sellers who are serious may offer to pay to haul off trash or try to work out another option to try to help the situation.

Another property de-valuer, especially in today’s economy, is the foreclosure. While it is true that you unfortunately cannot personally do anything about a foreclosed home in your neighborhood, you should be prepared to take a hit on your home’s appraisal value. As unfair as it is, it is a good idea to be aware of the home values in your neighborhood and what other sellers are listing their homes for. You may need to consider discounting your home or offering incentives to counteract the foreclosure.

Foreclosure is so commonplace now that it probably won’t affect people coming to your neighborhood – in fact, it may draw potential buyers. You just have to be ready to compete with the ‘bargain’ a foreclosure may present.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition

What's there to do this weekend in Southeast Michigan? Bring your family this weekend to see some amazing artifacts this month to mark the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

On April 15, 1912, Titanic, the world’s largest Ship, sank after colliding with an iceberg, claiming more than 1,500 lives. During the 100th anniversary of the sinking, The Henry Ford will host the largest touring Exhibition of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, in Henry Ford Museum, March 31 through September 30, 2012.

This Exhibition, 10,000 square feet in size, features more than 300 artifacts – 250 of which have never been displayed in Michigan. In addition, visitors will walk through extensive room re-creations, be able to get their photos taken near the full-scale replica of the Grand Staircase, as well as learn about passengers on board who had local ties to Michigan.

Moving through this newly redesigned and expanded Exhibition, visitors will be taken back in time to 1912 and “travel” through the life of the Titanic — from the ship’s construction, to its on-board passengers, its ill-fated voyage, to the amazing artifact rescue efforts that involved divers returning to the sunken ship in recent years.

This event runs until Sept. 30th and the hours are daily from 9:30 am until 5pm. Tickets range from: Members: $10; Non-members: $27/ages 13-61, $22.50/ages 5-12, free/4 and under

Adding Curb Appeal with Landscaping

One way to attract buyers to your Michigan home is to invest in some landscaping. It creates curb appeal and helps your property retain maximum value when you choose to sell it. Now that the weather is warming up, now is your chance to make your yard stand out.

A beautiful yard is a head-turner, no doubt about it. The good news is that even if you can’t tell a tulip from a turnip at the garden center, you can still create eye-catching curb appeal by paying attention to the basics of good landscaping. Ignoring your yard—or doing something that’s out of character with the neighborhood—can jeopardize the assessed value of your home. Poorly maintained landscaping can be as much as a 5 or 10% deduction in its value.

Appraisers are quick to praise the allure of a well-tended lawn and good-looking landscaping when it comes time to sell your home, but most do not assign any specific increase in monetary value for upkeep.

Nevertheless, most professionals agree that curb appeal and a well-maintained appearance prevent your property from losing value. Here are the top suggestions from real estate agents, appraisers, and landscape designers for boosting the curb appeal of your yard:

GREEN UP THE GRASS

If your house has a front yard, make sure it‘s neat and green. You don’t want bare spots, sprawling weeds, or an untrimmed appearance.

It’s very simple to go to Home Depot, buy fertilizer, apply it every six weeks, and water it. This easy maintenance will keep your yard looking green and beautiful.

If the yard looks really scruffy, you may decide to invest in some sod. According to the National Gardening Association, the average cost of sod is 15 to 35 cents per sq. ft. If you hire a landscaper to sod your yard for you, labor will add 30% to 50% to the total cost of the project.

Another alternative is to plant low-maintenance turf grasses. Turf grasses are durable and drought-resistant. Expect to pay $18 to $30 for enough turf grass seed to plant 1,000 sq. ft. of lawn area.

ADD COLORFUL PLANTING BEDS

Flower beds add color and help enliven otherwise plain areas, such as along driveways and the edges of walkways. In general, annual flowers are a bit cheaper but must be replaced every year. Perennials cost a bit more but come back annually and usually get larger or spread with each growing season.

If you’re not sure what to plant, inquire at your local garden center. Often, they’ll have a display of bedding plants chosen for their adaptability to your area. Also, they‘ll be inexpensive because they’re in season. Pansies are good in the summer, and asters and mums in the fall add vibrant color.

For homeowners who have made a sizeable investment in landscaping, it makes sense to think about adding another 10% to 15% to the bill for professional lighting. You can’t see landscaping after dark, and buyers are not always looking at houses on a Saturday afternoon.

The cost of a system runs from $200 for a DIY installation to more than $4,000 for a professional job. If you‘re doing it on your own, the key is to light what you want people to see, such as mature trees and flowering shrubs.

PLANT A TREE

The value of mature trees is particularly difficult to determine. Mature trees contribute as much as 10% of a $100,000 property’s overall value. In addition, a properly placed shade tree can shave as much as $32 a year on your energy bills. Expect to pay $50 to $100 for a young, 6- to 7-foot deciduous tree.

You can make your own initial assessment of the value of your property’s trees by visiting the National Tree Benefit Calculator. For example, a mature Southern red oak tree with a diameter of 36 inches in the front yard of a house in Augusta, Ga., would add $70 to the property value this year, according to the calculator.

FoolMoon and FestiFools

Help turn downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan into a glowing, magical gala Saturday, March 31 – and then into a bright sea of colorful folks and massive papier mache characters on Sunday, April 1. It's all part of the 2012 FoolMoon and FestiFools, a pair of artsy street celebrations full of fun for the whole family.

Shimmering handmade lantern sculptures are the highlight (literally) of the free nighttime FoolMoon event, which returns for a second year. These objets d'illumination, crafted and wielded by the Ann Arbor community, form a humongous processional taking over the sidewalks downtown. Admire the host of glimmering creatures and shining shapes, or make your own to add to the mix. (You can find instructions for making an "illuminary" on the event's website.)

Revelers of all ages will gather at dusk (around 8 p.m.) at one of three starting points: Slauson Middle School, Kerrytown at the Farmers' Market and the U-M Museum of Art. From there, they'll dance, skip and frolic their ways to the intersection of Washington and Ashley streets in the heart of Ann Arbor. The sparkling street party runs to midnight, with live music, treats and a host of artful delights, like roving shadow puppet shows and building-sized experimental films.

The irreverent atmosphere gets a dose of sunlight (hopefully!) the following day at Tree Town's FestiFools street fair. A gigantic public art spectacle, the array takes to Main Street from 4 to 5 p.m., traveling between William and Washington streets. Watch for all manner of eye-popping papier mache puppets – of "magnificent, huge, bizarre, politically incorrect, human powered" varieties, promises FestiFools' Facebook wall – created by the community and U-M students.

Best of all, it's all free!

Staging is an important part when it comes time to sell your home! In today’s market, staging your home – setting it up to appeal to a wide variety of possible buyers, is more important than ever. You want your home to look neat, well maintained, spacious and ready to move into.

It is easy to make mistakes, but below are some of the top mistakes sellers make when they are preparing their house for the market:

You don't go it alone, don't be afraid to get advice from others on what looks neat and organized. Get your realtor’s advice; or if selling on your own, have a trusted third party walk the home with you and point out areas that look cluttered or cramped.
Keep in mind that you do not have to make extensive renovations or replace all the furniture to be successful. Keep things simple and your investments small. Updates to paint, replacing light fixtures or changing out pillows or bedcovers can all go a long way to giving your home an updated look without major expense.
Leave out personal items and knick-knacks. Be sure to remove family photos, school projects and other personal items that might make it hard for a new family to envision themselves living in the space.
If you need some inspiration, visit a few model homes for sale for ideas on attractive staging and open spaces. Open up heavy curtains with tie backs and make sure that your furniture isn’t in the way of creating, bright open spaces. If you need to take some things out, try temporary storage.
Avoid painting with dark or intense colors. Keep your wall and flooring colors to neutral, adaptable tones. Even if bright or varied color palettes are trendy, they are too much for most prospective buyers..
Avoid overstaging with accessories. Over the top accessories, including flowers, scents, and home décor items not only make it look like you are trying too hard, they can detract from the real form and functionality of your house.
You don't have to be a professional to get professional ideas!

Spring Exhibit at Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor

From the conservatory to the Gaffield Children's Garden, where young kids can learn about nature, Matthaei Botanical Gardens is a Southeast Michigan fave. This spot educates and informs families about nature through its greenhouse, native plant gardens and more. And now, this University of Michigan gem is marking a big anniversary with a new spring exhibit, Celebrating 50 Years on Dixboro Road.

Back in 1957, regent Frederick Matthaei Sr. and his wife, Mildred Hague Matthaei, dreamed of the day the university would have its own botanical gardens. So, in an effort to make their vision a reality, the couple donated 200 acres of land that would later become Matthaei Botanical Gardens.

To showcase the expansion and progress of this local landmark, Matthaei Botanical Gardens welcomes families to check out its temporary exhibit, open daily until April 8, 2012.

The exhibit features photographs from onset of construction, along with special highlights on historical plants – some of which still grow in the conservatory today.

Right now is a perfect time to buy a South Michigan home. There are affordable SE Michigan homes, a huge selection and low interest rates make purchasing a home now seem like the right way to go. But how do you know if you are ready to take that leap and become a homeowner? Below are some things that can help you know if you are ready!

You have your finances in order. Becoming a homeowner, especially in a difficult economy can be financially challenging. If you have created a budget and stick with it you are on the right path. Having good money-management skills are a must-have so that when you do own a home you will be able to have a smooth financial flow for monthly home expenses.
You have a sizable down payment of at least 20%. While this is a large amount of money to come up with it is important to have as you will start out with having some equity. There are options out there for zero or low money down loans but if you have to sell your home before you expect you can potentially loose money and you will also need to pay for PMI (priviate mortage insurance).
You have a steady source of income. Of course in a recession there is no real thing as job security but when you buy a home you are going to be required to have a reliable source of income to cover not only mortgage payments but all the other monthly and unexpected expenses that come along with homeownership. It is important to look at how stable your source of income is as well as having an emergency savings fund where you will have enough funds to cover these expense in case of a loss of a job or other emergency.
Your debt and credit are clean. Having a good credit score will help to not only get a home loan but will also get you a lower interest rate on your mortgage. Hold off on any large purchases such as cars before applying for a loan as this could effect your rating. Also review your credit report for free at annualcreditreport.com before even applying for the loan to check for any errors.
You are ready for the responsibility. In addition to the financial aspect of homeownership, you need to be sure you are ready for the other things that come along. Things like lawn care, upkeep as well as unexpected repairs need to be considered as part of owing a home.
